Perhaps the biggest security risk for sensitive data and programs is when the legitimate user takes the data home or on a trip in the laptop. Often, the only real security for this information is a simple password which is easily found by any hacker worth their salt. Armed only with the password, the hacker is able to obtain all of the information from the memory of the computer.

Removable Memory Solution

The present invention, Lobotomy (patent pending), approaches the problem from completely different approach. Lobotomy uses a removable memory such as a flash drive to work as a key. Just as your car is protected by a key that you carry with you, the Lobotomy key also allows you to render the entire computer inoperative or operative depending on the authorized user. By keeping the key with them, the user is assured that the computer, when not attended, is safe and if someone steals the computer, the sensitive data is kept protected.

In one mode, activation of the lock/unlock function of Lobotomy is done with a single key stroke; but, another more advanced version also uses a PIN which only the user knows (not even stored on the key). In this later version, even if an interloper acquires the key, it is useless without the PIN.
